MyoSock: Dynamic muscle function monitoring
As people age, loss and structural changes in skeletal muscle tissue and function occurs with muscle wasting starting as early as the fourth decade. Healthy muscle is essential not only for mobility, but also for cognitive function, metabolism, risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Axoband, developed by Axomics, is an electromyogram – electrodes for muscle activity measurement embedded into wearable bands.

The NeuroMotor PenTM(NMP) is a patented platform technology that combines sensor technologies with decision support software. Online Exercise Pathway: Remote delivery to provide specialised bed and chair-based exercise programs
Higher fitness levels are linked to better mental and physical health outcomes for older people but participation remains low often for fear of falling or provoking pain. Appropriately qualified trainers are also in short supply. This project aims to provide specialised bed and chair-based exercise programs delivered remotely via live-stream, and supported with videos and an app.

Patient Safety Research Centre: Empowering older people to avoid medication-related harm via a co-produced community pharmacy solution
This is a new pharmacy alert system microservice that notifies pharmacy staff if a patient has a visual impairment by displaying a logo on the patient’s medication record. Alongside this, the accompanying FLAG-Me Vision website collates access to information and strategies to improve medication safety that pharmacists can explore with their patients during 1:1 consultations.

Physical activity programmes have been shown to have many benefits for people living with dementia. This research project aims to better understand the experiences and benefits of providing physical activity within dementia-friendly communities across England. It also looks at the barriers to participation and provision of activities. The overall aim is to guide communities on best practice so they can provide better physical activity provision for people affected by dementia.

Precision medicine in the home for real-time zero-effort monitoring of health
Digital health technologies using measurements of urinary biomarkers of disease are available for self-administered home testing. Here they can help spot early signs of conditions like cancer, diabetes and heart disease. But they can be daunting to use, especially for older adults. This project develops a zero-effort home platform for testing and explores both technical and non-technical barriers to adoption.
