Lower limb loading during sports movements
Ageing influences older adults’ ability to perform dynamic sports movements and these changes can place unique demands on footwear. Different characteristics for footwear may be needed for safe sporting activity. This project targets the development of new footwear specifically designed for older adults participating in sport and exercise, helping them stay active for longer.

MyoSock: Dynamic muscle function monitoring
As people age, loss and structural changes in skeletal muscle tissue and function occurs with muscle wasting starting as early as the fourth decade. Healthy muscle is essential not only for mobility, but also for cognitive function, metabolism, risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Axoband, developed by Axomics, is an electromyogram – electrodes for muscle activity measurement embedded into wearable bands.

Online Exercise Pathway: Remote delivery to provide specialised bed and chair-based exercise programs
Higher fitness levels are linked to better mental and physical health outcomes for older people but participation remains low often for fear of falling or provoking pain. Appropriately qualified trainers are also in short supply. This project aims to provide specialised bed and chair-based exercise programs delivered remotely via live-stream, and supported with videos and an app.

Physical activity programmes have been shown to have many benefits for people living with dementia. This research project aims to better understand the experiences and benefits of providing physical activity within dementia-friendly communities across England. It also looks at the barriers to participation and provision of activities. The overall aim is to guide communities on best practice so they can provide better physical activity provision for people affected by dementia.
