Roger Iles

I have a diverse background in quantitative risk assessment with an international career that spans over 20 years in space science, agriculture, insurance risk modelling, and cyber and climate risk. Previously, I have been employed by the Mullard Space Science Laboratory (part of University College London, UK), the European Space Agency (Holland), Syngenta Crop Protection AG (Basel, Switzerland), SCOR AG (Zurich Switzerland), Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), and Vivid Economics (UK).

I have experience and passion for bringing together experts from different backgrounds, academia, industry, public sector and regulatory, to solve complex issues and drive forward frontiers in risk and society. I have previous experience playing this role as a freelance risk consultant working as an advisor to the Swiss government on cyber security; cyber accumulation risk analysis with the SVV; notably as programme lead for the Cyber Risk Management programme based in Singapore; and while investigating space weather impacts on society.

My passion for science also led me to co-found and operate the scientific research and consultancy company, SolarMetrics. Over the years, I have collaborated with many enterprises and institutions, including Virgin Atlantic, Virgin Atlantic Global Flyer, Space Ship One, United Airlines, QinetiQ, Civil Aviation Authority, UK government and the National Physical Laboratory, specifically investigating and mitigating the risks of exposure to cosmic radiation to humans and technology, within our atmosphere and beyond.

I hold a PhD and Master’s degree in Astrophysics from University College London.
