The gut-sleep-brain axis: Non-pharmaceutical approaches to promote healthy ageing
Sleep problems are linked to both dementia and overall lower quality of life. This project builds on existing known interactions between sleep, gut health, and brain functions and aims to develop low-cost, individually tailored, and accessible alternatives to current treatments. These interventions are informed by home-based objective sleep assessment and involve non-pharmaceutical methods such as enhanced sleep education (e.g. behavioural techniques and mindfulness), dietary supplements targeting sleep quality, and gut health improvement in older people.

XR Therapeutics: Immersive tech to treat ageing population phobias
XRT, a spin out of Newcastle University, based on 9 years of academic research, combines traditional CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) with gradual exposure to treat phobias and anxiety in older adults. Treatment is delivered using VR (Virtual Reality) technology within a fully immersive VR cave.
