Follow Global Alliance on the latest Global Expert Mission in Electric Vehicle Charging to US
From 12th June 2023, the Global Alliance team at Innovate UK, the UK Science and Innovation Network (UK SIN) and the Department for Business and Trade, travels to the US to focus on potential markets for collaboration in electric vehicle smart and bi-directional charging.
The electric vehicle (EV) smart and bi-directional charging landscape in the US is rapidly evolving to meet the demands of a growing market. UK companies can benefit from this technology by developing partnerships with suppliers and industry leaders in the US. Additionally, bi-directional charging systems allow for the integration of EVs into the grid, offering new revenue opportunities for companies in the energy sector.
California is leading the way for EV adoption in the US, as well as the development and deployment of different types of charging infrastructure to meet users’ varied needs. Therefore, California represents one of the most mature US markets in EV charging infrastructure, with an established ecosystem bringing together government, innovators, research, and industry in a coordinated way, supported by the appropriate policy and funding.
In this context, Innovate UK will deliver an in-person Global Expert Mission (GEM) in June 2023, where a group of UK experts will meet private and public sector organisations in the US to better understand the innovation landscape and help benchmark against UK capability.
Understanding the V2X (vehicle to everything) research, innovation and regulatory landscape in California is vital in shaping the UK’s strategy on energy flexibility and bi-directional EV charging, and providing opportunities for UK businesses to partner internationally. I am very much looking forward to fruitful discussions and exploring the opportunities within this area.

This GEM will play an important role in identifying and shaping bilateral collaboration opportunities between the UK and California in EV and smart bi-directional charging.
