UK Sustainable Aviation Fuel industry gets £53 million boost
The Department for Transport (DfT) has announced the winners of their £53 million Advanced Fuel Fund aimed at boosting the UK’s sustainable aviation fuel industry (SAF).
The nine projects will deliver a 2.7 million tonne CO2 saving and boost UK production of SAF to 810,000 tonnes. The projects will utilise sustainable waste feedstocks such as household waste and industrial gases and include pyrolysis, Fischer-Tropsch and five power-to-liquids processes.
UK Government is committed to delivering a SAF mandate requiring at least 10% of UK jet fuel to come from sustainable feedstocks by 2030. Innovate UK KTN is playing a key role in enabling that target to be reached through our Sustainable Aviation Fuel Innovation Programme (SAF IP). Already, the SAF IP team have enabled British Airways to be the first airline in the world to fly on UK produced SAF. Plus, Wizz Air will be the first European airline to fly on UK produced SAF.
