Following a question at the National Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition (CMDC) Round 4 Briefing Event, Innovate UK would like to clarify that Strand 1 and Strand 2 allow for both Industrial Research and Experimental Development research categories. These Strands are not just restricted to Experimental Development alone. Strand 3 allows for Feasibility Studies and Industrial Research categories. It will be up to the applicant to justify their project is in the correct research category.

About the recording

Following on from the successful first three rounds of the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition (CMDC), the organisers welcomed stakeholders from across the maritime sector and supporting industries to attend this important event about the next stage of the programme.

The recording explains the latest opportunities to engage with the CMDC programme and deliver the transition to clean maritime, as well as providing an opportunity to network with other organisations. Additionally, as part of this event, CMDC2 projects and other organisations with project ideas are encouraged to pitch their plans to develop their technologies beyond CMDC2.

All stakeholders across the UK’s clean maritime eco-system are strongly urged to watch this recording. Organisations interested in the CMDC can also register to Meeting MoJo, an online platform for organisations interested in innovation to network and connect.

Background

In March 2022, the Government allocated £206m for a UK Shipping Office for Reducing Emissions (UK SHORE). This is a programme within the DfT focused on accelerating the technology necessary to decarbonise the domestic maritime sector. UK SHORE is delivering a suite of interventions aimed at addressing different barriers to maritime decarbonisation. This includes a flagship multi-year CMDC to help bring pre-commercial technologies to market level.

The first round (CMDC1) ran from September 2021 – March 2022 and allocated £23m to 55 projects across the UK. The second round launched in May 2022 and allocated over £12m to 31 clean maritime feasibility studies and pre-deployment trials, which are delivering between January and August 2023. The third round launched in September 2022 and allocated £60m to 19 technology and system demonstration projects, which are delivering between April 2023 and March 2025.

UK SHORE committed to a fourth round (CMDC4) later in 2023. This will build on CMDC2 projects, although there is no requirement for interested stakeholders to have participated in previous rounds. CMDC4 has now been announced with a closing date of 27th September 2023 – click here to read more.
