Measuring semen motility through video microscopy

Tiffany Wood is an entrepreneur with a passion for utilising scientific advancements to address societal challenges. Prior to co-founding Dyneval, she established the Edinburgh Complex Fluids Partnership at the University of Edinburgh to foster collaboration between scientists and industry.

Dyneval’s core technology is an algorithm that measures semen motility through low-resolution video microscopy. They have commercialised this tech for semen motility assessment, reducing the need for fertility experts to examine samples through a microscope as is currently the case.

“As a company we are primarily focussed on the livestock production industry at the moment,” explains Tiffany. “But our ambition for next year is to develop a product for human fertility assessment and to double the size of our team.”

Tiffany is aware of the challenges faced by women in innovation and has been inspired by previous winners of the Innovate UK Women in Innovation Programme. She is honoured to have received the award and is eager to strengthen her network. With a goal to learn about building effective teams and scaling up, Tiffany hopes to take Dyneval to an exit point in the future and then go on to support future entrepreneurs.

Her advice to aspiring innovators is this: “Follow your ambitions with tenacity and don’t be put off by the doubters.”
