Automating the rehabilitation process to improve the treatment of patients and reduce clinician’s workload
Penny Trayner is a practising paediatric clinical neuropsychologist and psychologist based in Manchester. She is a leading expert in treating young people after acquired brain injury and working with other complex neurological and psychological difficulties.
In 2019 she developed Goal Manager, a cloud-based digital platform which automates core processes in rehabilitation goal setting, making services more efficient and effective for clinicians and service users.
“The project really developed organically out of my need to try to improve my own services, and has since taken on a life of its own,” says Penny. “Until I developed the platform, the systems tracking the progress of the millions of people undergoing rehabilitation were largely spreadsheet or paper based, with no standardisation or consistency across the sector, increasing inefficiencies.”
Goal Manager has already successfully launched in the private healthcare sector and is about to begin trials within NHS settings, which will allow the public sector to reap the same benefits.
No matter how successful it becomes, Penny intends to remain a working clinician. “In my view, it is essential that I stay on the frontline of service delivery so that I am acutely aware of what services need and can design innovations accordingly.”
