Encouraging ethnic minorities to maintain active lifestyles with cricket
Cricketqube is a lifestyle community that encourages people to be active and happy through accessible, weekly cricket sessions.
Since its inception in 2021, Cricketqube now hosts an average of 16 sessions and 250 face-to-face interactions a month. They also conduct a variety of projects, from helping older South Asians improve their fitness with cricket, and another in collaboration with University of the West of England to promote healthy ageing amongst ethnic minorities.
Cricketqube is already seeing great results, with 50% of participants having learned new skills, 57% having improved their physical health and 86% feeling happier since taking part in the sessions. With the support of the Innovate UK Inclusive Innovation Award funding, the team hope to continue their journey, helping their community become more equitable and inclusive.
Cricketqube founder Alosh K Jose grew up in India, and has loved cricket since he started playing aged five. However, after moving to the UK four years ago, he was surprised to see the lack of health opportunities for ethnic minorities, particularly those aged 60 and over.
He wanted to find a solution that would help this group be more active, whilst also spending quality time with their family and wider society – and so he combined his love for cricket and passion for health, creating Cricketqube.
“We understand that helping hard-to-reach communities is not easy and that, with many other opportunities, it would have been hard to have the time and focus to do precisely that. But the scope of this Award gave us the confidence to do so,” says Alosh.
