About the project

UK-registered Partner: PyroGenysys Ltd – Simon Ighofose
Africa-registered Partner: Nasarawa State University – James Jayeoba

The NUTRICHAR Nigeria project, led by PyroGenesys in partnership with Nasarawa State University (NSU), developed and tested a range of Biochar Biofertiliser formulations registered under the NUTRICHAR™ trademark owned by PyroGenesys.

Pot trials conducted at the NSU Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Agronomy, green house unit in Lafia, of Amaranthus, Tomato and Pepper seedlings grown in NUTRICHAR™ treated soil, showed improved performance compared to the control, NPK & Manure treatments.

Trial data measurements were gathered from each potted crop type grown in triplicate in a standard soil control, soils treated with NPK, Cow and Poultry manures, and 5 NUTRICHAR™ formulations. In addition, Biochars produced from a range of locally available waste crop residues were characterised. These Biochars were used to produce the NUTRICHAR™ formulations used in the pot trials.

The findings from the project will facilitate the registration of NUTRICHAR™ as a locally produced Biofertiliser with a view to providing farmers in Nigeria with a renewable alternative to imported, synthetic NPK.
