About the project

UK-registered Partner: University of Huddersfield – John Allport
Africa-registered Partner: Mandulis Energy Limited – Peter Nyeko

The project is a feasibility study to assess the energy balance for a waste to energy process. Several technologies are being explored to use agricultural waste as feedstock for biogas production, such as biodigestion, pyrolysis and gasification. This biogas can then be used in either diesel engines or micro gas turbines to generate electricity and heat, both of which can then be used in crop processing.

The study has created a model which will indicate the best technologies to use in each case, and also highlight which areas of the process would benefit from optimisation.
