UK-Nigeria Sustainable Construction Global Innovation Network

Delivered by Innovate UK Global Alliance Africa, this Global Innovation Network will drive an innovative and fundamental shift in the Nigerian construction industry, with the aim to promote sustainability, innovation and enhanced collaboration between the UK and Nigeria construction sector players.

About the network

The UK-Nigeria Sustainable Construction Global Innovation Network is Innovate UK Global Alliance Africa’s focus area for the Nigeria circular economy sector. It is set up to create a platform to inspire and connect key stakeholders and industry leaders across the value chain in the building and construction sector.

It is aimed at fostering a dynamic bilateral UK-Nigeria collaboration by exploring emerging technology and knowledge transfer solutions from sustainable circular innovations to facilitate transformative environmental impact and amplify circular economy solutions in both the UK and Nigeria. The building and construction sector in Nigeria is heavily reliant on steel, concrete and cement which are major contributors to greenhouse gas emissions.

Below are some key drivers to engage stakeholders to foster innovation and as well as promote the adoption of sustainable materials and practices for the building and construction sector.

Low-Carbon Building Materials

Promotion of the use of low-carbon materials, such as recycled concrete, sustainably sourced timber, and alternative cementitious materials, to reduce embodied carbon in construction projects and develop affordable housing projects.

Sustainable Construction Practices

Implement sustainable construction practices that emphasise deconstruction, salvage, and reuse of building components, reducing the need for new materials and energy-intensive production.

Focus Areas

The UK-Nigeria Sustainable Construction Global Innovation Network will consider the role of innovation in three key areas. These focus areas will enhance UK-Nigeria collaboration and partnerships, influence policy and regulation, increase accessibility to more sustainable and affordable housing/buildings, and advise people to adopt sustainable construction materials and practices.
Affordable Housing

Affordable Housing

In this area, we will be looking at pre-fabrication in particular sustainable manufacturing, modular prefabrication, and on-site assembly.

Sustainable Construction Materials

Sustainable Construction Materials

We will support sustainable construction solutions including low-carbon building and alternative materials for building, construction, finishings, and integration of already existing solutions.

Construction Waste Management
