Solve your design problem using a Design Sprint

Posted on: 12/09/2018

You may have heard of a Design Sprint or wonder what all the buzz is about. Does it really work, is it another fad?

Jake Larsson, Knowledge Transfer Manager for Design, hopes to clarify a few things about design sprints, for you here.

A design sprint is a time-constrained, five-phase process that uses design thinking with the aim of validating features with users and thereby reducing the risk when bringing a new product, service or a feature to the market. The process (originally from Google Ventures in 2010) helps teams to reframe problems and adhere to clearly defined project objectives and create a product roadmap for further development. By nature it is interdisciplinary and involves rapid prototyping and user testing.

This process is similar and often synonymous with design sprints in an Agile development cycle. It is nearly exclusively used in the development of digital products and services, but we in the KTN design team believe that all design process including Design Sprints, share common principles or mindsets and have similar steps that resemble:

Design sprints are great if you have a clear problem and are seeking to produce a Minimal Viable Product (MVP), revise the user experience or add new features and functionality to a digital product. That being said, you need to be prepared, and doing your homework ahead of time is necessary. Creating a map of your persona’s journey and having the right people lined up for the sprint (both internal experts as well as users to test on) is critical and takes some planning. Having delved deep into your problem, gained genuine insights and understanding, you are now ready to start creating a more refined solution.

Jake Larsson will be attending the Design Sprints Done Right on 20th-21st September hosted by Design Sprint Academy. This workshop is for you if:

●      You struggle to get team alignment on a project.

●      You want to learn a practical and repeatable method to understand your customers.

●      You are looking for new ways to speed up the timely and costly process for product and service development.

●      You no longer want to watch investment in products with no market fit.

This workshop is NOT for those wanting to sit back and hear the theory. This workshop is for the pragmatic who want to understand how Design Sprint will work for them in a hands-on, collaborative way.
