UK SPINE to host Knowledge Exchange Conference on healthy ageing and affordable medicines in April.

The first annual UK SPINE conference in Knowledge Exchange will be taking place on 16th and 17th April 2019 at the British Library in London. The theme of the event will be focussed on Healthy Ageing and Affordable Medicines. This is a Connecting Capability Fund (CCF) programme initiative.

The event is targeted at thought leaders, researchers and clinicians working and interested in the fields of healthy ageing and affordable medicines. It is likely that one of the days may be of more relevance to certain people than the other, therefore you can sign up independently for either day. The event aims to capture the opportunities and challenges currently faced, engage current and future stakeholders and disseminate information on UK SPINE’s plans over the coming year. UK SPINE invites attendees who are driving regulation, innovation and knowledge exchange, those engaged in innovative research, industrial organisations, patient focus groups, charities and clinicians.

The first day (16th April) focuses on the UK SPINE and Knowledge Exchange for Healthy Ageing programme. The aim of the day is to showcase how knowledge exchange and collaboration has the potential to lower the barriers of entry to developing therapeutics aimed at the ageing process and preventing disease. Day 2 (17th April) focuses on the Affordable Medicines Initiative, a multi-discipline initiative seeking to address the following aspects of medicines discovery:

  1. Technical – undertake research to explore the use of emerging technologies that can reduce the time and cost producing compounds.
  2. Legal – explore new models of IP and approaches to open innovation.
  3. Regulatory – developing novel clinical trial methodologies, new approval routes and adapting regulations to keep up with advancements in science. To address this, it will be necessary to engage experts in this field, such as policy makers and statutory bodies.
  4. Financial – establish a programme of work to explore complex health and socio-economic components of the medical delivery ecosystem with a view to identifying new financial models.
