Teams of design students were hard at work for 2 days at the Materials Research Exchange 2018 in the Business Design Centre, London.

Students were asked to create product ideas influenced by the materials on show at MRE18 that best address one of the following themes – Waste, Energy and Health.  The winning team comprised the following students from the Health team, who were each given £50 amazon vouchers:

-       Marina Leridou, Queen Mary University London

-       Giselle Hsiang Loh, Brunel University

-       Anne Zhou, Royal College of Art

The students were mentored by James Burchill, Sara Robertson and Adam Sutcliffe who oversaw their project work during the event.

Students were also given the opportunity to provide insights into how design can deliver the best impact for these materials during the MRE18 seminar “ Design for Materials Commercialisation”, chaired by Ben Griffin, Design Lead, Innovate UK.

Dr Robert Quarshie, Chairman, Materials & Design Exchange (MaDE) Partnership said:

“We were delighted to host the design students for 2 days at Materials Research Exchange 2018. The work of the MaDE Partnership in supporting design students is key to advancing the future of the industry and connecting materials science and design to stimulate innovation. Congratulations to the winning team!”

Organised by the Knowledge Transfer Network and Innovate UK and supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl), showcased the richness of the UK materials research and investment opportunities, providing an ideal opportunity to absorb current trends and take a glimpse of future innovations as well as building links within the materials supply chain to strengthen the UK materials offer to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and end users.
