SAF Mission to the USA

SAF SIG has completed a mission to the USA taking five UK SMEs on behalf of Innovate UK. The mission involved attendance at the three-day Commercial Aviation Alternative Fuels Initiative (CAAFI) Biennial General Meeting in collaboration with the Aviation Sustainability Centre (ASCENT) programme.  Read more.

A national bioeconomy strategy to 2030

The national bioeconomy strategy to 2030 sets out the approach that government, industry & the research community will take to harness the power of bioscience and biotechnology. The role of Sustainable Aviation Fuel is highlighted in a case study: “Virgin Atlantic have been working with LanzaTech to pioneer technology that captures and recycles carbon-rich industrial waste gases from steel mills into jet fuel. October 2018 saw the first commercial flight using this sustainable aviation fuel, which has the potential to achieve over 70% lower carbon emissions compared to conventional fuels. Following a UK government grant through the ‚ÄòFuture Fuels for Flight and Freight‚Äô competition they are looking to build commercial scale jet fuel plants in Britain.” Read more and download the strategy.

A Beginner’s Guide to Learning about Fuels

The seminar, on the 4th – 5th April 2019 in Germany, is intended for representatives of different industries and academia dealing with liquid fuels in one or the other way and who wish to learn about:

  • the basic principles of manufacturing fuels
  • the implementation of renewable fuel components
  • the role of additives
  • quality control throughout the supply chain
  • a general overview about sustainable aviation fuels

European Space Agency announce ‘Space for Biotechnology’ funding call

Firms can apply for up to €200k from ESA to develop biotechnology services that can benefit from using space-based data or capabilities. This opportunity enables companies to carry out feasibility studies and assess economic viability of applications across a range of themes, including Biofuel production / Sustainable Aviation Fuel.
