MRE Exhibitor Spotlight: The University of Sheffield

Posted on: 20/12/2019

The University of Sheffield will be exhibiting at Materials Research Exchange 2020 – visit them on Stand Number 52.

As the top university in the UK for income and investment in engineering research, the University of Sheffield is developing innovations that address real world problems. Attracting £124m in 2017-18, we undertake fundamental and translational research within a broad range of themes aligned with the UKRI Grand Challenges, including energy, sustainability, biomaterials, and future manufacturing.

The development of new materials and processes is pivotal to many of our research activities, not just in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, but also across the entire Faculty of Engineering. Our innovations are benefiting a wide range of people: improving quality of life; creating jobs; and stimulating the economy.

Three turnkey research projects funded by the EPSRC make up a significant part of the Advanced Materials Processing research within the Department of Materials Science and Engineering: the Henry Royce Institute (also funded by the ERDF), the EPSRC Future Manufacturing Hub in Manufacture using Advanced Powder Processes (MAPP) and Designing Alloys for Resource Efficiency (DARE).

The Henry Royce Institute at Sheffield is leading materials discovery to address challenges in aerospace, energy, healthcare and transport, delivering a step change in the discovery and making of new materials systems.

MAPP is working with industry partners to optimise operations in such a way that savings are made across the entire manufacturing process, whether that involves in-process measurement and parameter adjustment, advanced characterisation of materials before, during and after processing or infusing artificial intelligence based on real-time and historical data for process monitoring and control.

Through research and the design of new resource-efficient metal alloys, DARE is contributing towards a resource-efficient and low-carbon economy, helping industry reduce its reliance on strategic metals, and minimise waste.

Martin Jackson, Professor of Advanced Metals Processing, says, “The University of Sheffield has a strong reputation for collaborative research that is world-changing as well as world-leading. We’re really looking forward to the opportunity at MRE to make new connections across the materials community, with industry and academia, to shape the future of our research, and its impact on our planet.”

About MRE 2020

Taking place 18th – 20th February 2020, MRE 2020 is an exhibition, investor showcase and conference, which will demonstrate ground-breaking new materials developments and their manufacturing processes. Network with over 1500 delegates, meet key funding and decision makers and attend targeted seminars and keynote addresses.

Over the two days of MRE, you can expect to hear engaging talks from researchers, innovators, investors and industry, participate in masterclass sessions on how to pitch to investors and on IP and R&D tax credit. You will also be able to attend seminars on plastic packaging, battery developments, smart manufacturing, metamaterials and 2D materials, amongst many other topics. Confirmed speakers include Sir Mark Walport (Chief Executive of UK Research and Innovation), Dr. Ian Campbell (Interim Executive Chair at Innovate UK), Dr. Alicia Greated (CEO, Knowledge Transfer Network) and Professor Philip Withers (Regius Professor for Materials, University of Manchester).
