Launch Into Space and Nuclear

Posted on: 11/06/2018

The NPL MMN event, on 17th July will explore how to get involved in space and nuclear sectors and how it can benefit your business.

UK space industry

The UK space industry is a success story for manufacturing and an area for potential growth within the UK.

The UK is getting the go-ahead to start building its own space launch sites, so it can launch rockets and satellites from a UK-based “Spaceport”.

Space is one of the fastest growing industries in the UK: in 2014/15 it is worth more almost £14 billion (6.5% of the global space economy) and gives jobs to around 38,500 people, and the laws to get the engines fired-up on a spaceport are due to be passed during March.

Of this enormous sum, 8% was directly attributed to manufacturing and this is growing. The UK government has set a target for the space industry to grow to 10% of the world market by 2030 and is supporting this through the UK Space Agency by providing €200,000 grants for technology developments.

At the event held on the 17th July, Huddersfield-based SME ‘Reliance Precision’ will discuss their work in this sector and how you can become involved.

The nuclear sector

The UK has an ambitious plan to develop the latest generation of nuclear power stations to fill the gap left by decommissioned stations and the move away from carbon burning technologies. To meet its objectives, there will be a need to manufacture components and assemblies in the UK from both current manufacturers of these parts and from new suppliers. The government with Innovate UK, Research Councils and BEIS expect to invest around £460m in nuclear research and innovation between 2016 and 2021. Find out more about opportunities such as the “Small Modular Reactor”, potential sources of funding, how to access this market and about the support provided by organisations such as the Nuclear AMRC in Sheffield.
