Innovate UK to launch report into future technologies with potential to power economic growth
Innovate UK is set to launch a new report exploring the technologies most likely to be important to the UK’s future economic prospects.
The 50 Emerging Technologies report examines the technologies which could change our lives, create jobs, while propelling growth into 2040 and beyond.
The report will inspire innovators to consider our technological horizon and how the technologies, or combinations of them, could be turned into future commercial opportunities.
For each technology, the authors ask three key questions:
- What is the technology?
- Why is it interesting?
- How could it change our lives?
The featured technologies underwent a meticulous process, starting with Innovate UK’s Horizon Scanning team assessing over 1,000 technologies. Experts from diverse sectors were consulted to identify the most promising technologies. Thorough analysis of factors such as UK capability, opportunity, and societal impact were conducted, culminating in the selection of the final 50.
The technologies are grouped in seven technology families, all of which are important to the UK economy:
- AI, digital and computing
- Advanced materials and manufacturing
- Electronics, photonics and quantum
- Energy and environmental
- Biotechnology including engineering biology
- Health and medical technology including genomics and bioinformatics
- Robotics and space.
