Government announces £180m investment to enhance UK sustainable aviation fuel production
The UK Government published its Net Zero Strategy on 19 October 2021 announcing a £180m commitment to support the development of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production.
The proposed £180m is an unprecedented level of UK public investment in SAF and reflects the government’s commitment to decarbonise aviation. The Department for Transport intends to work with members of the Jet Zero Council SAF Delivery Group to scope out how best to utilise the funds.
The Net Zero Strategy forms part of a wider series of policy commitments to reduce emissions in transport. Starting with the publication of the Transport Decarbonisation Plan in July 2021, the government has also released Jet Zero and SAF Mandate consultations with the ambition to ensure that 10% of domestic aviation fuel production is SAF. The Jet Zero consultation considers technologies and developments to support the transition to net zero through innovative propulsion and energy vector solutions.
FlyZero is a 12-month project delivered by the Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) aiming to realise zero-carbon emission flight by 2030. The project informs the Jet Zero Council on the most promising low emission solutions for narrow and wide-bodied aircraft by comparing hydrogen, electric and hybrid-electric. The Jet Zero Council feels strongly that aviation will require more than one solution to reach reduce emissions and will include SAF, particularly for long-haul flight.
If you have any feedback on how best to utilise the £180m investment in SAF, please email the Jet Zero Council SAF Delivery Group Secretariat.

COP26 Sustainable Aviation Fuel Supplier Directory
The COP26 Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) supplier directory was curated with the support of the Jet Zero Council SAF delivery group (JZC SAF DG) to enable a supply of SAF to COP26, to provide those flying to COP26 with a range of sustainable supply chain options. It has now been superseded by the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Supplier Directory.
