Exploring potential applications for new sensor technologies in the marine sector

A report on the symposium to explore potential applications for new sensor technologies in the marine sector has recently been released.

On the 30th March, KTN and the University of Birmingham Quantum Sensors Hub in conjunction with the Royal Institute of Navigation and Dstl, organised a symposium to explore potential applications for new sensor technologies in the marine sector.

In Europe the Blue Economy is valued at €500B per yearand now provides the primary use for significantareas withininshore and coastal waters –as an example 20% of the North Sea is now occupied by windfarms and aquaculture. The marine environment is sensitive: to sustain/growthe Blue Economyrequires a detailed understanding of the entire water column across large areas of seawhere, often, only a basic level of informationis currently available. This will generate opportunities in the survey sector fornew forms of instrumentation, new survey techniques and new survey vehiclesin order toreduce the cost of acquiring the additional information.

The report highlights a number of topics discussed and outlines recommendations for further work.
