The Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) is a £1.5bn fund to support cutting-edge research which addresses problems faced by developing countries.

Innovate UK has recently secured GCRF funding to develop the GCRF AgriFood Africa programme.

As part of this new and exciting programme, there are two great opportunities open to PhD students and research partners. Both opportunities are closing on Monday 6th January at midnight so make sure you get your applications in on time. Here’s an overview of each opportunity.

Two PhD student Professional Intern Placement opportunities

We are looking for a PhD student with a UKRI- or other funded studentship. This opportunity is for the placement component of the studentship. We are looking for someone with an interest in innovation in the food system within Africa and its potential for impact on poverty as described in the programme scope outlined below. We welcome applications from a biological, chemical, engineering economic or social sciences background. The placement will take place in Edinburgh or London, for a period of 3 months.

The Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN) is pleased to announce a call for GCRF AgriFood Africa Innovation Awards as a means to encourage, to address AgriFood challenges in Africa. Up to £800k will be available to support a maximum of 20 awards. The call for Round 1 opens at our event on Monday December 9th, with up to ten awards of up to £40,000 available. The deadline for applications is midnight Monday January 6th 2020.

The GCRF AgriFood Africa Innovation Awards

You could get up to £40,000 to work on a collaborative project to address the AgriFood challenges of an African partner. This is particularly relevant for UK research partners, including Universities and Research Technology Organisations (RTOs). Projects must be between an African partner and a UK research partner that is likely to lead to a longer-term relationship and follow-on projects.
