Cyber Innovation Series 2022/23: IoTrim

Posted on: 26/01/2023

The next academic team we’re introducing as part of our Cyber Innovation Series is IoTrim, designed to make Internet of Things or IoT connections private and secure using privacy-preserving AI techniques.

The IoTrim team will be in action at this year’s sixth annual CyberASAP Demo Day on 22 February, showcasing their innovation, pitch and Proof of Concept alongside our 14 other academic teams.

About IoTrim

IoT devices expose information over the internet and have access to private user information which can then be shared. Unfortunately, the security and privacy of IoT devices is hard to control, making them vulnerable to attackers and malware. With 636 million people worldwide using IoTs in their home, the risk is palpable.

The international research team behind IoTrim are on a mission to protect families from the threats posed by the Internet of Things. Through extensive testing and research, the team found that the tools available right now simply don’t work as they should. Many are unreliable and don’t notify users of threats, can slow down the internet connection or even pose further risk due to the use of third party services.

They wanted to create a tool that actually works, one which anyone can use without needing specialist expertise. They created IoTrim to help monitor and block non-essential network activities, as well as identify device exposure and security threats, in an easy-to-use, ‘plug and play’ system.

Using privacy-preserving AI techniques, IoTrim builds insights and behavioural models, preventing violations of privacy by intercepting and blocking information exposure to third-party analytics and service providers. The solution uses a unique methodology and can be built into the router itself.

The team hope that with the right support, IoTrim can be integrated into the Internet Service Provider’s (ISPs) home router and controlled off a smartphone or app, providing a huge opportunity for ISPs and a secure smart home experience for their customers.

Meet the IoTrim Team

The team have been working together and carrying out research in this area since 2018, and after extensive marketing research and discovery, found that there was a need to address a gap in the IoT security market. They’ve spent the last four years developing their concept at Imperial College London.

As experts in security and privacy for networking systems, the team have garnered much interest across the industry, as well as from journalists looking to report on the latest developments of their research. With the help of seed funding, they hope to hire the production expertise they need to optimise their software and make IoTrim a reality.

The team consists of:

  • Dr. Anna Maria Mandalari – Co-Founder & CTO
  • Prof. Hamed Haddadi – Co-Founder & CEO
  • Dr. Daniel Dubois – Co-Founder
  • Prof. David Choffnes – Co-Founder
  • Vadim Safronov – Developer
