Challenging the Status Quo on Healthy Ageing: Redefining Demographic Change to Global Opportunity

Posted on: 26/04/2017

The Neighbourhoods of the Future report encourages us to rethink the outlook for ageing populations, especially in terms of housing.

A new report produced by the Agile Ageing Alliance (AAA) in association with McCarthy and Stone on Cognitive Homes and Neighbourhoods of the Future predicts significant opportunities for innovative social entrepreneurs and SMEs across all sectors.

The report was launched on 10th May at the AAA’s Neighbourhoods of the Future event, hosted by NatWest and sponsored by Swiss Re, in partnership with KTN. This event addressed some of the most pressing challenges and revealed the huge potential opportunities across health, wellbeing and social care.

A range of expert panels unpacked and discussed how care for an ageing population might benefit from more effective use of data, and the technical, design, and policy innovations required for the development of inclusive future communities can benefit the UK and its businesses. The event highlighted global opportunities for innovation in the human side of smart cities. It also defined collaboration opportunities for innovators from large and small businesses and a broad range of stakeholders beyond.

With speakers from across the health and care, digital, finance and built environment sectors including some big names from within those domains, the event took a closer look at the ways in which a ‘cognitive home’ in the context of a wider neighbourhood / city could adapt to and benefit those ageing at home on their own terms – alongside the scope this could provide for collaborative initiatives in big data, preventative care, and digital infrastructure.
