Cardiff wins £5m SMARTExpertise funding
An £80m Cardiff University powerhouse for Welsh scientific research has been ‘topped out’ by Bouygues UK.
Sven Knowles of the Enabling Technologies team, attended the ‘topping out’ of the new building for the Translational Research Facility at Cardiff University. The term ‘topping out’ signifies that the structure today reached its maximum height of six stories.
This 11,000 sqr m building is due to open in 2021 hosting two research facilities - Cardiff Catalysis Institute, developing new catalytic processes, and the Institute for Compound Semiconductors, providing cutting edge facilities enabling researchers and and industry to work together.
The industry-led project will involve partners in the South Wales compound semiconductor cluster – CSConnected – working in chip design, fabrication, innovative waveform-based characterisation, testing and production, developing Radio Frequency Gallium Nitride (RF-GaN) technologies for applications including 5G communications, phased-array radars, military equipment, automotive radar, healthcare and imaging applications.
Not even the recent weather could dampen our spirits as the enthusiastic group climbed six stories to the roof of the building to enjoy the fantastic views and speeches.
