Capturing the value of mathematical study groups with industry

KTN needs academics and businesses previously involved in mathematical study groups to take part in a survey

Mathematical science study groups with industry have, for over 50 years, been a vital mechanism for mathematical scientists to meet industry representatives and work towards practical solutions in structured, multi-day sessions.

Beginning in Oxford in 1968, the format has propagated internationally and in the UK has evolved to become an important and flexible intervention tool by Innovate UK to engage mathematical sciences in topics of key importance; from energy systems, to agriculture.

In the recent Bond Review into Knowledge Exchange in the Mathematical Sciences, Professor Bond recommends that: “Resources for workshops with industry should be broadened and increased. In particular the Mathematical Study Groups with Industry should be expanded in scope.”

Whilst there is much anecdotal evidence for the often transformative results from the study groups, there has yet to be a detailed review of the impact these sessions have on a) the businesses who attend them and b) the mathematical science discipline as a whole.

KTN have been involved in developing two surveys which aim to capture the value of these activities and is looking for past-participants in study groups from both academia and industry to help by taking 15 minutes to complete the relevant survey.

If you are an academic who has participated in a study group in the past 20 years, please use this survey.

If you are a business who has posed a challenge at a study group in the past 20 years, please use this survey.

The surveys are anonymous unless you provide your email address at the end.

Getting responses from both communities will be hugely important in assessing the value of the study groups and your help is greatly appreciated.

Please complete the survey by midnight 20 August 2019.
