Apply for an Energy Catalyst mission to Burma
Global Challenges Research Fund is seeking applications for its Energy Catalyst mission to Burma from 6-12 July 2019
The mission is designed to support the Energy Catalyst Round 7 funding where up to £22m is to be invested in innovation projects that will help countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia access secure, low-cost and low-carbon energy.
This mission will offer innovators applying for Energy Catalyst Round 7 a unique opportunity to gain greater understanding of the energy access issues in Burma (Myanmar) and foster links with potential partners.
The visit to Burma is open to UK-based micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, Research Technology Organisations, academic organisations, third sector and public sector organisations.  Those applying for the mission must also be applying to Energy Catalyst Round 7 and working within technology that addresses all three areas of the energy trilemma (low cost, low carbon and secure energy).
Burma is a country of over 50m people and access to electricity has slowly increased over the past few years, from 34% of the population in 2015-16 to 40% in 2018. This continues to be a high priority for the government and is the focus of significant domestic and foreign investment.
The successful cohort of UK innovators will primarily visit the city of Yangon and will have the opportunity to pitch to Burmese companies and organisations to find potential partners.  Meetings will be set up with various government officials in the renewable energy sector, plus group meetings with key industry players to help understand the energy landscape and energy access issues.  There will be a pre-mission briefing in London on Tuesday 2 July providing market information and pitch training.
