Innovate UK funds smart mobility and ticketing technology | G7 series
Innovate UK has invested in an advanced smart mobility and ticketing technology to simplify journeys and drive a greener, smarter economy.
With support from Innovate UK EDGE, Unicard, a smart transport and ticketing innovator has raised £175,000 in Innovate UK funding to develop its inventory management technology for dockless bikes and e-scooters. The company is growing rapidly with a £1.7m contract with Transport Scotland.
Founded in 2003, Unicard is a well-respected provider of smart ticketing solutions to the UK’s public transport sector, processing over half a billion smart transactions a year.

Cropdesk's cloud benefits for data hungry farming sector | G7 series
A cloud computing start-up that monitors farm productivity has raised £235,000 in Innovate UK funding, launched a recruitment app and expanded its software development team – all with help from Innovate UK EDGE.
Cropdesk was founded by third generation blueberry farmer – and grandson to the UK’s first commercial blueberry farmer – David Trehane.
“When I took over the farm, harvest workers would write their name on a piece of cornflake packet and stick it to the box they picked,” says David. “That’s the level of data we were gathering. Our sole metric for whether we had a good season was our bank balance.”
Using his background in cloud computing, David built a solution that would measure worker’s picking speeds, track the productivity of berry varieties and predict yield by analysing climate data.

G7 Series - Med-tech innovator's prognosis improves after COVID hit
A medical technology innovator is seeing significant growth following support from Innovate UK EDGE to overcome challenges posed by the pandemic.
A Dorset-based med-tech innovator, who partners with clinicians, SMEs and universities from across the UK to solve unmet clinical needs, saw its business decline by 80% due to the impact of COVID.
Keith Heaton, managing director of i2r Medical describes its business model: “Our typical partner might be a clinician who has identified a specific clinical problem that is having a negative effect on the patient and the healthcare system. We step in to clarify the unmet clinical need and work with the innovator to design a solution that can be manufactured at a viable price.”
