A programme to support Skills and Manufacturing Scale-Up for the Semiconductors Industry

The Skills Education Manufacture Innovation for Semiconductors programme (SEMIconductors) will invest up to £18 million to assist the improvement and scale up of semiconductor manufacture within the UK. Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, are inviting innovation projects to apply for an initial stage of two funds totalling up to £6.5 million for 1) Scale up Feasibility competition and 2) Skills competition, that are relevant to the Semiconductor industry.

Later in 2023 there will be a further up to £11.5 million competition following on ideas from the Scale-up Feasibility competition to initiate 12-month duration projects.

The competitions close on 29th March 2023.

About the competitions

SEMIconductors Scale up Feasibility Competition

This will invest up to £1.5 million in innovation projects to assist the improvement and scale up for semiconductor manufacture within the UK.

This aims to enable UK businesses in the semiconductor supply chain to develop their manufacturing capability through innovation and help continue to develop a resilient UK supply chain for this key suite of enabling technologies.

This feasibility competition aims to:

  • Understand the existing facilities and capabilities
  • Identify best practice
  • Establish innovations and new manufacturing techniques
  • Encourage new collaborations across industry and academia

Your proposal must identify or deliver a clear, game-changing intervention and address an identified industrial requirement or improvement. This must realistically and significantly meet and provide a long-term commitment to supporting the UK semiconductor industry.

Key Dates:

Applicant Briefing Event – Friday 3rd March 2023 11:30-13:00 (Joint with SEMIconductors Skills Competition) – see recording above

Competition Launch – 27th February 2023

Competition/Applications Close – 29th March 2023

SEMIconductors Skills Competition

This will invest up to £5 million in innovation projects to address the skills shortages across the Semiconductor industry.

This aims to create and deliver course content and materials that will support skills, talent and training across Semiconductor manufacturing and supply chains to build awareness of the Semiconductor industry and fill key gaps in the UK’s workforce talent and training capabilities.

Opportunities could include but are not limited to:

  • Schools’ engagement
  • Apprenticeships and internships
  • Upskilling and reskilling of existing workforce
  • Technical courses and vocational training
  • Undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing professional development (CPD)
  • New or improved process development
  • Creation of STEM ambassadors
