The UK’s vision is to capture 10% of the global space market by 2030. In order to realise this, enrichment of the existing space ecosystem is required. To go beyond the current space infrastructure and develop new critical capabilities, innovation in materials, manufacturing and testing is required.

Innovate UK KTN and the Defence Science Technology Laboratory (Dstl) are inviting you to attend a virtual Roundtable Discussion to share your understanding and knowledge on the opportunities, challenges, and needs in materials R&D for the themes below. The purpose of this workshop is to help shape the direction for Dstl’s Materials for Space strategy.  This is your chance to showcase your research and influence Dstl’s Materials for Space Science & Technology Research direction.  Come prepared to talk openly about what you are specifically researching under the different focus areas and why.

Roundtable topics:

Sustainable Materials for Space | 1st December 2022

The low Earth orbit (LEO) population is estimated to grow from about 4,000 satellites to 100,000 by 2030, increasing the risk of debris-causing collisions. Durable materials and reuse/remanufacturing concepts are required.

Lightweight Materials & Structures for Space | 6th December 2022

Lightweighting and mass efficient structures are critical attributes for space launch vehicles, since the reduction of structural mass translates directly to vehicle additional performance, reduced cost, and increased payload mass capacity.

Materials to Survive the Natural Space Environment | 8th December 2022

Space is not a single environment – it is many. Before materials even get into orbit, they undergo severe stresses in the launch environment. Only the most robust of these materials can survive.

Why attend the roundtables?

  • Influence the focus areas of Dstl’s Materials for Space Science & Technology Research direction
  • Shape the future requirements and applications of advanced materials for space
  • Showcase your technological innovations
  • Build connections with stakeholders across the value chain

What to expect?

  • An overview of why sustainability, lightweighting and structural materials for space are of interest to Dstl, and how to engage with Dstl and MOD
  • Interactive session to share your views on the barriers, challenges and opportunities that will accelerate innovation in Materials for Space
  • Input your ideas to develop a roadmap for Dstl’s Science and Technology  Research direction

Who should attend?

  • Materials innovators
  • Industrial R&D users
  • Academic researchers
  • Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs)
  • Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEMs)
  • Space primes

You do not need to have previously worked in the space sector to contribute to the roundtable but experience in the listed technology areas is desirable (check registration form).
