The University of Plymouth is among the UK’s leading proponents of clean maritime research and innovation. Through engagement with business and the wider scientific community, it is pioneering new ways of transforming this research into practical solutions to challenges being faced across the marine and maritime sectors.

Webinar recording is now available

Marine electrification is the transition of the maritime industry from the use of fossil fuels to the use of electricity for operational needs. It covers the entire boat propulsion system including everything from the generators to the propellers and thrusters and also energy supply networks in the port/dock areas.

Almost 80 percent of the transportation of commodities is carried out using marine vessels. Like any other transportation system, fossil fuels are generally used in the maritime sector, which results in CO2 emissions and the consequential impact on climate change. The maritime transport sector requires technical developments towards green transformation and this includes the Electrification of Marine Vessels.

Join this webinar to hear about the work undertaken by the University of Plymouth to bring about the Electrification of Marine Vessels, and learn more about the challenges, and opportunities in this sector. Their lead projects include the refitting of two passenger vessels with electric motors, and their ongoing tests to monitor the impact. Alongside this is the Marine e-Charging Living Lab (MeLL) project to put an e-charging infrastructure in place, wherein additional valuable knowledge is being gathered and will be shared when the project officially launches in the Spring of 2022.
