Thermal Energy Systems

KTN supports the heating and cooling industries in the UK including the electrification of heat (heat pumps, storage heaters, dry heating systems), heat networks (infrastructure, heat exchangers, heat network optimisation) and low carbon gases (hydrogen, biogas and other green gases).

Heating and cooling generation and storage for domestic, commercial and industrial use are also supported including CHP (combined heat and power), solar thermal and ground and air source heat pumps, phase change heat storage, inter seasonal storage and more traditional water storage systems.

KTN’s focus over the last few years has been the industrial sector to help the manufacturing industries to reduce their carbon emissions. The majority of their emissions are created through the generation of the high-grade heat needed for their industrial processes. KTN has supported, and continues to support, a number of BEIS funding programmes to support the reduction of carbon related to heating.

The future focus will be on reducing the carbon emissions associated with cooling required for domestic, commercial and industrial sectors. The KTN is working with Innovate UK to develop their future programme in this area.
