About the podcast series

Silent Designers explores untold stories of innovators driving change through design. Inspired by Innovate UK’s Plan for Action, we delve into pivotal areas like Net Zero, Health, and Tech.

Join us as we unravel the motivations and challenges of industry disruptors, extracting valuable insights to inspire innovation in your business.

  • Steve Welch

Steve is half-engineer, half-scientist … all innovation! After a lengthy career in systems engineering applied to Spacecraft projects, he is now director of Innovate UK Business Connect’s activities in Knowledge Transfer, Place and Design.

Steve has long appreciated the overlap between engineering and design and is always delighted by fresh ideas—especially the fresh ideas that pay-off: and that’s where this series comes from.

    Katherine Wildman

Katherine is a B2B copywriter working with multinational businesses on projects that can involve anything from video scripts and tone of voice development to marketing campaigns and case studies.

Katherine is interested where innovative ideas come from. What was the actual problem our guests identified and how they went about solving the challenge they faced?

  • Pete Broadbent, Connected Design Team Lead, Connected Places Catapult

Pete leads the Connected Design Team at the Connected Places Catapult. He has held leadership positions in design agencies, management consultancies and the public sector so has encountered and supported many silent designers.

As a qualified executive coach Pete is well placed to help unlock the innate design skills across organisations and systems to help people understand, exploit and engage with design.

Rob Maslin, Design Lead, Satellite Applications Catapult

Rob Maslin, is Design Lead at Satellite Applications Catapult, and a Design Council Associate, best known for working in sustainable service design for over 10 years. He is experienced in project design methodologies, design training, user workshops, and fostering strong working practices within teams.

Teresa Miquel, Senior Insights and Analytics Manager, Digital Catapult

Teresa leads the design, development, and implementation of the project-level monitoring and evaluation framework at Digital Catapult, alongside the system-based Theory of Change for a holistic impact evaluation.

As an Economist with a master’s degree from the Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose at UCL, she champions the use of design approaches and collaborative methodologies to unlock value, draw on the organisation’s diverse expertise, and ensure the capture of broader outcomes across projects and programmes.
