Submissions invited on Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation

DfT consultation examines potential for sustainable fuels.

Transport accounts for a quarter of our domestic greenhouse gas emissions and UK government is committed to reducing those emissions by 80% by 2050. Achieving this target will require a strong commitment and policy framework and in turn create a positive investment landscape.

To make the step-changes, the Department for Transport has launched a consultation on its proposed revisions to the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO) to which you are invited to respond. The deadline to respond is 22 January 2017 at 11:45pm.

KTN welcomes the consultation, particularly in light of the potential to add a specific policy to stimulate production of sustainable aviation and HGV fuels: two difficult to decarbonise transport modes.

The RTFO consultation follows the historic international agreement (October 2016) by The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to reduce aviation emissions and implement global market-based measures.

The production of biofuels is considered as a necessary step to complement the market-based measures to ensure carbon neutral growth from 2020. The inclusion of aviation fuel in the RTFO will be a step towards creating a positive investment landscape in the UK for sustainable aviation fuel production.

If you would like to submit a response, details can be found here.
