This competition is looking to test fibre in water solutions in the real world, and ensure secure and resilient access to fibre in water technology. The focus is on connecting the hardest to reach areas in the UK, reducing water leakage, enabling innovative technologies for the water industry and ‘future proofing’ water and telecommunications infrastructures.
Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) has ambitious plans to invest in infrastructure and unleash innovation in the tech and digital sectors to drive productivity in public services and economic growth.

In the Fibre in Water (FiW) project, DCMS, DEFRA and other government departments are working together to fund trials exploring the feasibility and viability of extending rural connectivity through exploiting existing and new technologies. FiW is looking to test fibre in water solutions in the real world; and ensure secure and resilient access to fibre in water technology. The focus is on connecting the hardest to reach areas in the UK, reducing water leakage, enabling innovative technologies for the water industry and ‘future proofing’ water and telecommunications infrastructures including de-risking the PSTN switch-off between 2021 and 2025.
Initiatives in digital infrastructure promote equality and present opportunities to complement other Digital Strategy initiatives such as the National Underground Asset Register and the National Digital Twin Programme.
Consortia comprising organisations from the water and telecommunications industries and their supporting sectors are invited to collaborate in addressing these challenges.
This online event will be of interest to the water and telecommunications sectors, technology providers, engineering firms and consultancies looking to explore new challenges and opportunities across both sectors and beyond.
