SCALE
The Solihull & Coventry Automated Links Evolution (SCALE) project is a collaborative effort spearheaded by Solihull Council.
About the project
This £5.6 million driverless vehicle project is being funded by the Centre for Connected Autonomous Vehicles (CCAV). The project will deploy a fleet of three self-driving vehicles to transport passengers between Birmingham International rail station and Birmingham Business Park via the NEC. This route has a recognised need for alternative transport options and presents an ideal opportunity to develop commercial self-driving solutions in the area ahead of the HS2 launch.
SCALE aims to demonstrate and further develop understanding in the following areas:
- Commercial viability of self-driving operations
- Passenger value and pricing structures for these services
- Ongoing operational practices, including insurance, repairs, maintenance, fleet ownership, and service management
- Verification and validation of automated systems
- Human factors and the development of remote assistance and driving solutions
